The most important contribution of the mobile operator in the country's ecological security is the fact that mobile communication is one of the most environmentally friendly industries. MTS takes responsible approach to choosing the equipment, installation and location of the base stations in accordance with international and Ukrainian standards of health and safety protection. The suppliers of MTS are world famous companies. Their equipment meets the most strict safety standards applicable in Ukraine (our domestic standards of mobile safety are 2.5 times more severe than, for example, in Russia, and more than 10 times severe than European standards).

The principle of “green office” is one of the fundamentals of MTS business:

Electronic document management

MTS has become one of the first Ukrainian companies, which as far back as in 2002 introduced SAP electronic system of resource management. Since 2006 the company has almost completely abandoned the paper work.

Within MTS more than 20 automated electronic compliance databases covering contracts, purchase orders, internal regulations, tender procedures as well as placement of orders for office equipment, office accessories, reservation of meeting rooms and appointment of meetings in online mode with a possibility to track the status of these applications have successfully been implemented and are presently operating.

Due to the fact that MTS documents are not printed out, one base saves about 100 kg of paper per year. Correspondingly, 20 bases save about 2 tons of paper a year. Taking into account that recycling of one ton of paper saves 15 trees, we are saving around 30 trees each year.

Electronic archive

Electronic archive has become an integral part of the electronic document management system in the company, which allowed excluding the paper component from the document management process at the storage stage.

Nowadays the electronic archive contains more than 6 million documents. The total storage volume of graphic files exceeds 1 TB. Monthly about 100 thousand new documents are added to the electronic archive. In terms of a standard 8-hour business day and 20-day business month, this means that about 625 documents are added to the electronic archive every hour.

Using the company’s services by employees

The possibility of moving the business from paper to electronic format is not the only benefit which the mobile communications offer. In MTS we have a wide range of exclusive technologies and products for the Ukrainian market that help save resources. Today, also thanks to the Blackberry service, the concept of a mobile office making it possible to save time, the most important resource which is always in short supply, has become a reality.

Instant access to email and corporate databases, viewing presentations, photos and text documents using a mobile terminal considerably minimize the use of natural resources. Man no longer needs to print out an important letter so that not to forget to answer it, or print out abstracts for the presentation report - everything is on hand at any moment and in a single device.

Below are some interesting facts and figures on the service (the statistics provided by Research In Motion):

Personal productivity - the Blackberry users’ productive time is increased on average by 60 minutes per day (by reducing the waste of time). It is 250 hours a year.
Scope - Blackberry allows conducting business and doing work outside the office. Blackberry users observe the improvement of staff efficiency on average by 38%.
Efficiency - a Blackberry user processes “on the fly” on the average 2,500 urgent messages and more than 1,200 calls a year. Such efficiency is estimated more than $ 5,000 per person a year.
Profit rate on invested capital - at a very conservative estimate it makes at least 238%; besides, it corresponds to the Investment Return period - 154 days or about 5 months.

System of electronic staff recruitment E-Recruitment

In 2009 MTS launched a system of electronic staff recruitment E-Recruitment. The system allowed upgrading the company’s HR feature and reducing the resource costs for personnel selection. In particular, the system allowed the HR specialists of MTS to reduce the costs on publishing of new job announcements by nearly 50%, reduce the costs of agency recruitment services by almost 60%, and also allowed to improve the process of internal recruitment, which contributed 10% reduction of employee turnover.

Efficient use of vehicles

One of the elements of our strategy is to optimize resources, which is linked to both the key business processes and the supporting services. An example of this can be our system of order and use of motor vehicles for office purposes enabling us to keep a small fleet of cars without reference to the directorate or department by just using it in the most optimal way and reducing at the same time exhaust emissions into atmosphere.

“Electronic application for the car” has allowed transport operation group to reduce the number of vehicles in use by two cars during the year, and save 15,000 kilometers of mileage due to the combined orders.

The use of wind turbines on a mobile network

In the village Malorichenske of Alushta Region (ARC) is set the Excel-R wind turbine manufactured by American Bergey WindPower company, which ensures operation of two base stations (GSM and CDMA), as well as operation of the optical multiplexer. Rated capacity of the equipment is 7.5 kW. During the year the generator has developed eight thousand kWh of electricity

With sufficient wind speed (more than 4 m/s) unit generates electricity for charging batteries which feed processing equipment of base stations and transmission systems, and can also be used to power home base station loads (lighting, air conditioning), which reduces electricity consumption from an external network.

As compared with the traditional methods of energy production such as a diesel generator, wind plant provides substantial environmental and economic benefits. In the case of a diesel generator the normative consumption of diesel fuel for covering power shortage in the base station would amount to two thousand liters a month (24 tons per year).

The practice of using wind turbines will be spread to other "windy" regions of Ukraine.

Collection of waste paper

In 2010 MTS has joined the waste reducing program “Club A4”, which is implemented in partnership with the national campaign “Go Green” initiated by the United Nations Office in Ukraine within the frames of the Global Treaty.

This program seeks to put into practice the concept of “green office” purposed at more efficient use of resources and assistance in organizing of waste paper collection generated by offices of enterprises. Within the frames of this program, in the Kyiv offices of MTS containers for waste paper collection are set, processing and recycling of waste paper are carried out.

Among the company's employees is developed a volunteer movement. MTS volunteers are actively involved in all-national subbotniks, organize cleaning activities, planting of trees, arranging of flower beds etc.

It is also worth mentioning that in MTS office there is no smoking. This decision was made by the employees themselves to show respect to colleagues, support healthy lifestyle and demonstrate environmental care.
